Homebrew Recipe - Session IPA


At a modest 4.0% alcohol this beer allows for prolonged enjoyment of Simcoe and Amarillo hop aromas.

0.75 lb Caramel Malt 40L Mash Grain Caramel Malt (Roasted)
0.25 oz Amarillo Hops (9.5% AAU) 60 minute boil
0.5 oz each Amarillo & Simcoe Hops (9.5% & 14.0% AAU) 20 minute boil
0.5 oz each Amarillo & Simcoe Hops (9.5% & 14.0% AAU) 1 minute boil
0.5 oz each Amarillo & Simcoe Hops (9.5% & 14.0% AAU) Fermenter
1 pack WLP001 California Ale Yeast (plus 1/4 pack for bottle conditioning) Fermenter

Procedures

  1. Mash crushed grains in 3.5 gallons of water at 153-155°F for 60 minutes
  2. Sparge grain with 170°F water to obtain desired pre-boil kettle volume
  3. Bring to boil, add 60-minute Hops
  4. Boil 40 minutes, add 20-minute hops
  5. Boil for 19 minutes, add 1-minute hops
  6. Boil for 1 minute
  7. Turn heat off and cool wort to 66°F
  8. Transfer to fermenter
  9. Pitch one pack of WLP001 California Ale Yeast

Primary Fermentation: 1-2 weeks at 64-68°F

Secondary Fermentation: 1 week at 34-38°F with fermenter-hops

Fermentation Notes: Force carbonate, or bottle condition with dissolved priming sugar and 1/4 pack of WLP001 California Ale Yeast for 2-3 weeks

Original Gravity: 1.040

Final Gravity: 1.009
